Gas Regulator Stations | 2007 | Denver, Colorado Gas regulator piping, which forms a neighborhood’s vital natural gas infrastructure, is typically concealed with drab metal sheds. Stapleton Development, a brownfield redevelopment project on the site of Denver’s former Stapleton airport, wanted to re-think the appearance of the gas regulator stations that are spread throughout its New Urbanism neighborhoods.
The design veils the gas piping behind a fence-like structure that weathers with, and blends into, the landscape. A glimpse of the gas piping through translucent and perforated materials allows passersby to understand both the function and the intent of this unique public art.
The steel frame structure is wrapped with a lattice of steel fins of varying depths. All steel is untreated and left to weather naturally. Translucent acrylic panels and perforated blast fencing salvaged from the original airport runways form the sound and weather barrier behind the frame.
