Children’s Playground | 2002 | Seattle, Washington The existing school yard of the underserved T.T. Minor Elementary School in downtown Seattle looked more like a parking lot than a playground. Working with BaSiC Inititative, we turned this vast expanse of concrete into a playful, sheltered space for school children.
A dynamic wood-and-steel trellis runs along the north edge of the site. A raised planter creates a buffer between the play area and the street. Two steel frame garden sheds are built to support the school’s gardening program. To accommodate the school’s Double Dutch jump rope competitions, concrete bleachers curve gracefully to form an outdoor stage.
